South Burlington School District
Healthy Schools
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Welcome
Three years ago a group of South Burlington School District staff members engaged in a year-long training offered by the Community and Economic Development Office (CEDO) entitled “We All Belong.” The work supported efforts in inclusion, diversity, and cultural competency.

In its fourth year, the South Burlington School District Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee continues its commitment to its mission to actively enhance the atmosphere of genuine acceptance, empowering all people to feel safe to be themselves.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are part of Healthy Schools – programs our school district has identified as contributing to the well-being of our students, staff, and families.

From the moment people enter our doors – that onboarding stage – we want them to immediately gain knowledge of our commitment to diversity/equity/inclusion as well as to mentoring, mindfulness, and wellness – the other branches of Healthy Schools.

______________________________________________________
The work invites three questions:
  • Who are we?
  • Where are we?
  • Where do we want to be going?
The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee has embraced these questions as guides for their work this year. The Committee is meeting regularly and has established three subcommittees: one to focus on students, one to focus on staff, and one to focus on community.
Our work will be driven by the school district’s Ends Policy:
  • “Understanding and expressing how diverse cultures and people enrich the human experience.”
  • “Building supportive relationships and respectfully advocating for self and others”
  • “Developing an awareness of [students'] individual learning styles, interests and passions” and those of others.
Our committee is adamant in our belief – and we are certainly not alone – that diversity is one of the greatest strengths of our school community. A richness results because we all come from different places, we all learn in different ways, we all have stories that are varied and valuable. When we bring those experiences to one another, the opportunities to learn and grow are immeasurable. We believe that schools should be leading the way in modeling how to be equitable and inclusive – and we see evidence of this already happening in our school district and are honored to continue that good work.
